Day 9 – documenting my makes

As I mentioned in my last post, I have been getting into sewing a lot lately.

At the end of last year I decided that I was not going to buy any clothes in 2020. If I wanted anything I had to make them. Plus I wanted to expand my handmade wardrobe which mostly consisted of t-shirts and skirts.

So far I have in 2020 I have made 11 pieces for myself, plus 2 things for Miss A. 2 of them were dresses I started towards the end of last year but had not finished.

I know this because I have since gone back and documented all of the clothes I have made for myself since I got back into sewing in 2015. 33 in all. I am not a fast sewer as Miss A keeps telling me I would be no good on the Great British Sewing Bee as I am too slow. But I am not competing against anyone so it doesn’t matter.

In a notebook, I recorded what I made, the pattern name, the size I made, if I made any modifications to the pattern, the fabric name/ type and where I bought it from, the thread name and any notes, such as a new skill I learnt, if the garment fits or anything else I think I might like to remember for the next time I make the item. I also include a swatch of the fabric.

It was fun going through my fabric scraps and my Instagram and Facebook accounts to find all my makes and to reflect on what I have made. As well as a learning tool this notebook also plays to my librarian need to ‘catalogue’ and ‘classify’ things.

There are 17 pages left in this notebook. Will I fill it up by the end of the year?
