I have a mild cold at the moment thanks to Miss A so I took the day off yesterday. I was also quite tired which is why this didn’t get posted yesterday.
I did have a little bit of energy in the middle of the day to do some sewing. I have been doing quite a lot of sewing lately – more on that later.
Anyway, the other week I started to make a pair of wide legged culottes from a pattern called the Winslow Culottes by an independent pattern designer from Canada called Helen’s Closet. I have made one pair before, knee length in a stiffer cotton and I have been meaning to make a long floaty pair in rayon for quite a while now. Looking back I mentioned it in my blog post on 24 March 2018.
I had got half way through sewing the culottes when I realised that I had sewn the front to the front and the back to the back. Disaster. Unpicking it would have meant unpicking most of the garment and I had already sewn in the side pockets. Plus trying to unpick the rayon would have guaranteed to have resulted in pulled threads. So I put the unfinished garment aside for a week or so to think.
Instead of it languishing for years in my UFO (unfinished objects) box I was inspired to turn it into a skirt. There was plenty of width in each of the legs so even with just cutting off the crotch area of both sides I was still left with plenty of width for it to still look okay.
I continued on inserting the zip, one of the best invisible zips I have ever sewn in (thanks to wonder tape) and the waistband to create my first ever maxi skirt.
I even remembered to add in a cute label from Kylie and the Machine. I am sometimes to eager to finish a garment I forget to sew in a label.
I don’t know how much wear it will get but it is better than being in the UFO box.
That’s a really cute skirt. I am enjoying the blog xc
Thanks Claire
