Day 10 Blog June – Alternative careers

This afternoon on my way home on the bus I was thinking of what career I would have if I wasn’t a librarian.

If money was no object, in terms of the cost to get the required qualifications, or in the earning potential; and there were no other obstacles I would like to be either:

a forensic scientist

I know forensic science is nothing like portrayed on tv shows such as CSI or Bones but I am fascinated all the same. I like the idea of putting pieces of evidence together with information to create the bigger picture. I also like the chemistry aspects of science. It was the only science subject I did at high school plus I did some chemistry in my undergraduate degree.

Or

a historical researcher

Just like the stuff Kieran Long or Kate Williams do on Restoration Home. Or the behind the scenes people on Who Do You Think You Are.

So if could have an alternative career or job what would it be?

Great blog Rach! So many options if money and time were no object. I’d have a different career for every day of the week I think, just so I’d never get bored. Historian on my list too. Librarian of course ? Belly dancer, psychotherapist, writer, occupational therapist working with kids…. I think that’s a 7 day work week! ?

I can’t picture you as a belly dancer Lisa. But then again I have never seen you dance. We will have to rectify that.

Lol obviously I wouldn’t be an accountant or statistician since I can’t even count to seven …….D’oh!! ☺️

If money was no object, I’d love to be a writer, publishing short stories and novels. An alternative career would also be a teacher. I love to see others grow.

Good luck with your writing dream. There is no reason why you cannot be a published author and a librarian.

I always dreamed of studying archaeology. I did a bunch of units as electives in my first degree but didn’t have the courage as a younger person to go for it because many people advised me to get ‘a real job’. I am a 30 year old full time student who lives with her folks, so safe to say I never really achieved that ‘real job’ anyway, haha!

    Great question!

I’d make stuff… Be an artisan. Pottery maybe.

Or an academic, but in a different field. Art history or literary studies.

Maybe there is a deep down link between librarianship and forensics, maybe a common desire for sharing knowledge or something.
